Around the 16th century the Samurai sect emerged in Japan. With the exception of the Shogun , they were the only class allowed to possess and use weapons. The katana (long sword) and the Wakizashi (short sword) were for the exclusive use of this warrior sect and were the soul of the Samurai. The most valued gift that a Shogun or Daimyo (clan lord) could present to a Samurai was a katana or wakizashi. Today, it is still the custom in Japan to make a gift of such a sword on special occasions.
