History of the Yukata
The word 'yukata' comes from the words 'Yu' (bath) and 'katabira' (under clothing).
Thousands of years ago, Court Nobles wore linen 'Yukatabira' draped loosely around the body after taking a bath. These gradually became worn by Japanese warriors and then by the lower classes when public baths became popular.
Today, the traditional Japanese yukata are widely used for everything from dances and casual clothing in the summer, to simple evening wear. In some places they are referred to as summer yukata even though they are approprite year round wherever a lighter garment is desired. In Japan, the yukata is usually made in 100% cotton fabric and traditional prints and patterns.
The 100% cotton makes it practical for comfort year round. All yukata are available in a variety of prints and colors and are sized to fit most adults. Please check our sizing chart (above) and call if you need assistance with sizing. All of our yukata are handmade in Japan in the traditional manner and include a matching sash. Feel free to browse our online store and let us know how we can be of further assistance to you.
